The Working Holiday Japan program allows you to work legally in the country for up to 12 months, giving you the flexibility to stay for as long as you see fit within this limit while immersing yourself in Japanese culture through a Working Holiday Visa.
Registration and Process Duration
Applications are open year-round. Once you obtain the visa (which depends on the opening dates of available slots per country), you will have up to 3 months to enter Japan.
Visa quotas are limited per country each year, so it is recommended to start your application as soon as you make your decision.
Program Duration
This program can last up to 12 months, or for a shorter period if preferred, depending on the completion of your job in Japan and/or your travel plans. However, keep in mind that the visa allows only a single entry, meaning you will lose your visa if you leave Japan before completing 12 months.
REQUIREMENTS
- Be a Canadian citizen, between 18 and 30 years old.
- Have at least advanced English and basic Japanese language skills.
- Possess a valid passport to begin the visa application process.
- Have and provide proof of sufficient funds to cover your initial stay in Japan.
- Upon entering Japan, provide proof of a round-trip ticket or a one-way ticket with sufficient funds to purchase a return ticket (approximately USD $2,200).
- Have no criminal record.
- Have not previously participated in a Working Holiday Visa for Japan.
There is a wide variety of jobs you can do, including:
Jobs in cities like Tokyo:
- Restaurants, cafés, and fast-food chains.
- Kindergartens and daycare centers (in English).
- Babysitting and childcare.
- Sales positions in stores (Japanese required).
- Language teacher (not only in formal language schools but also in language cafés or conversation clubs—this applies to French, Spanish, German, Chinese, etc.).

Important Notes:
- While it is possible to find a job without any knowledge of Japanese, having at least basic Japanese skills significantly increases your chances.
- You can learn some Japanese before your trip and/or attend an intensive Japanese course in Tokyo during your first month (or longer) while you look for work.
- We can arrange language lessons at a language school. Later, you may consider continuing with less intensive and more affordable lessons at a community center, which we can guide you through.
- Hourly wages for these jobs range from ¥890 to ¥1,500 per hour (approximately €7.40 to €12.40).
- There are both full-time and part-time positions available. If you have a higher level of Japanese and/or professional qualifications, you can find jobs with a higher hourly wage.
About Ryokans:
A ryokan is a traditional Japanese-style inn, originally created to accommodate short-term visitors. Today, ryokans are often used as luxury accommodations, especially for Western tourists.
Main Work Locations:
Most job opportunities are available in Tokyo, but there are also options in:
- Hokkaidō (famous for volcanoes and hot springs).
- Tōhoku (known for mountains and ski resorts) in the north.
